Day 51 (Australia – Home Preparation)

I attacked what remains of my shopping list with gusto and (though I am sure this will change) I believe I only have one thing left to buy. Well, two things: two bottles in which to store Rohloff oil and cleaning fluid. Everything else I managed to tick off with a visit to several stores in Belmont, culminating in a purchase of a new gadget: an electronic book reader. I was averse to buying yet another gadget but after trying out my brother’s kindle last night I was convinced to consider it seriously. I liked having a book on my ride and was saddened when I finished one in the middle of nowhere with no chance of replacing it. This wouldn’t happen with a book reader that I can preload with heaps of titles. A book reader would also support my tendency to read multiple books at once. Perhaps best of all, a kindle is actually smaller than a real book. The only downside is that I love having a physical book in my hands, the scent of its pages and all that. After considering all of this, I visited Dick Smiths and am now the proud owner of a Kindle Paperwhite. This evening I hung out with my sister and one of my two brothers (the other lives in eastern Australia).

Kindles are so useful for travelling. But I think my return home will coincide with a return to real books. Nothing like spending time in a bookstore! (Although bookstores are becoming increasingly hard to find these days…)
