– The adventures of a solo round the world cyclist –

Day 224 (Australia – Top End)

It seems that proximity to a city is positively correlated with the number of idiot drivers on the road. I have come within 65km of Darwin and did not enjoy the afternoon ride because of the road conditions. Some people are just unnecessarily dangerous. One car of dickheads passed me at high speed as close as they could without hitting me, hurling abuse as they went by. This was on an open road with no other traffic around so it was just blatant, moronic behaviour. Welcome to Darwin! At least the morning went well and I found myself an awesome place to spend the middle of the day: the Coomalie Creek Park Area. It was the best rest spot I have had, complete with a thick overstorey of lush, green trees that provided shade by the edge of a creek. I lay out a bed and swapped between dozing, reading and swimming.

If only all rest stops could be as nice as this one!

I spent 7 months road tripping Aus this year, starting in Brisbane and pretty much followed the coast all the way back to Brisbane and I couldn’t agree more…closer you get to the cities…the more d*ckhead drivers! Liked the post, I will be following your adventure! Happy travels

Yes it’s an unfortunate truth. Fortunately my way out of Darwin is an aeroplane so no need to put up with it again! Thanks for the kind comment. All the best with your ‘great escape’ from the trappings of life in the UK!
