Today I realised I am finally feeling very relaxed, having settled into being in a foreign place. This would mostly be due to the fact that I have been here for more than a week now, but I think it might also have something to do with my being engrossed in Wanderlust. It is inspiring me to have the courage to accept exactly what I want in life and to be shameless about going after it. This trip is exactly what I want to be doing right now and so there is nowhere else I would rather be than here. I chilled out at home for most of the day. Nick and I caught up for a swim at Kaz Bar and later Ben, Joel and I went to dinner at a Turkish restaurant. We spread out a map and ran through my intended route with them both offering pieces of advice when they could: ‘Man, you will seriously die riding up this hill’, ‘Do not be outside in Baucau after dark’, ‘You’re gonna have to walk your bike down this road, it’s just way too steep and rocky to ride down’, ‘Don’t go swimming from this point on, otherwise you will get eaten by a crocodile’. These dire warnings were mixed with mostly positive statements such as: ‘The views you get through these hills will be worth the effort’, ‘Baucau is beautiful to explore during the day’, ‘If you make it down this rough road, you will find the most beautiful beach’. There was no mistaking the threat of crocs though: ‘Seriously, just don’t go near the water from this point on…one person a month gets taken by a crocodile here’.
