– The adventures of a solo round the world cyclist –

Day 260 (Timor-Leste Day 13)

Today I met Aty at the front of a kiosk in the centre of Maubisse. He approached me as he was keen to practise the English he had learned in the three months he spent at the local SOLS (Science of Life Systems) School. He invited me to his home for coffee, so I jumped on the back of his motorbike. His house was by Western sensibilities a makeshift shack with corrugated iron walls, a tin roof and dirt floors. He wished he could continue studying English, but his family can’t afford it. He is one of ten kids and the little money the family makes is not enough for them all to become educated. I am starting to meet people with obvious potential to contribute to society in the way they dream, but who won’t ever have the opportunity to do so.

Yes me too!!! I started dreaming of coming back one day with the funds to personally help out…but such an endeavour will have to wait. It’s a big lesson in how unbalanced the world is, how lucky I am, and how many people at home squander the great opportunities placed before them.
