I prepared my mind for a massive day and have come out the other end largely unscathed. I’m not free from trouble though, for I now have a series of blisters on my arse that make even walking a painful exercise, let alone sitting. The blisters are the result of constant rubbing of sweat-soaked shorts on sweat-soaked skin on sweat-soaked saddle. The terrain for the first half of the day was blissful. Around 11am, I holed up at a warung run by a man who has taken it upon himself to learn English and with whom I could therefore have a basic conversation. I had a nasi campur (my latest favourite), then slept on the bamboo platform out the front, waking up intermittently to ‘chat’ with curious locals and keep drinking water. By 2.30pm, after another nasi campur, the sky was becoming ominously overcast. The rain hit just as I got back on the bike. I enjoyed riding in the heavy downpour. Soaked to the bone while adults took shelter, I was able to share a sense of camaraderie with the kids out in the street playing in the rain and being chided by their parents for becoming drenched. In Sumbawa Besar, I let myself be directed by the general flow of traffic until I spotted a hotel that looked crap enough to be suitably cheap. After a quick wash, I ventured out for dinner (another nasi campur) and when that meal wasn’t big enough, I went to a warung further down the road for second one.
