Saddle sore update: still inflamed with infection and painful to sit, but slightly better than yesterday. I forced myself out of bed at the sound of my alarm and prepared my backpack for a day out. I ventured to the Sultan’s Palace and on the way had a chat with a guy who works as a gardener at one of Yogya’s universities. He gave me useful advice about catching cheap public buses to the distant sites like Borobudur and Prambanan. Near the palace I enjoyed a delicious AU$0.50 breakfast of rice and vegetarian dishes at a street side warung. I found my way to the palace entrance and paid my $1.35 entrance fee. I immediately approached a stage where a group were getting ready to perform a wooden puppet show. When I had enough of the production, I wandered through the palace’s open grounds. Next up was the Water Castle. Finding my way there through small lanes was a bit of an adventure. On the way I met a man who produces “civet coffee”, made from beans that have been pooped out by mongoose. Before I reached the Castle, I stumbled upon an entrance to the Underground Mosque and had a good explore. By this time I had been interviewed on camera by three groups of Indonesian students as part of a school assignment.

I continued my way through narrow gangways until I reached what were once the Sultan’s private swimming pools. Somehow I’d managed to get in some kind of back way without paying. The Bird Market was next and I let my stingy legs carry me all the way there rather than pay for a ride. It was sad to see so many incredible creatures locked up in unsuitable conditions. From the market, I trekked all the way home. On the way I was impressed by a group of street musicians playing beside a set of traffic lights at a busy intersection. I filmed them performing and walking among the stopped traffic collecting tips. I relaxed at home for a couple of hours at home before joining K for an amazing night out at Taman Pelangi, a massive park adorned with an impressive collection of glowing lantern sculptures. It was an awe-inspiring spectacle that gave me ideas of creating a similar thing in Perth one day.
