With a bum slathered in Vaseline I set off for Malaysia. Negotiating Singapore’s roads was frustrating. At one point I had to tend to a rubbing brake pad and got attacked by some vicious ants in the process. Then I couldn’t work out how to get over the bridge connecting the two countries. I rode around in circles for a couple of hours, at one point getting stuck on a busy highway heading in the wrong direction. I eventually worked it out and made my way onto the ‘BKE’. It was a crazy road to be riding on, but I was determined to reach Malaysia independently. Border control was shockingly easy. I didn’t have to say a word on the Malaysian side. The officer just entertained himself for a minute looking at all of my stamps (the passport goes back to my backpacker days) before adding his own and waving me on. All of a sudden I found myself on a busy highway within the Malaysian city of Johor Bahru (or ‘JB’ as many people call it). I followed signs pointing the way to Kota Tinggi, the town I had planned on reaching, before seeing a hotel and deciding to call it a successful day. It turns out the hotel is one of those classy pay-by-the-hour establishments. I was given a clean room with a single bed, so I’m hoping I’m not in a well-‘used’ room. I had no Malaysian money so a friendly guy gave me a scooter ride to an ATM. He must have thought I was weird because I couldn’t stop yelling during the ride – both of my legs were cramping up painfully. My bum seems to have done ok but I won’t know for sure for a few days.
