I lay in bed through the morning letting my body revel in not having to move. Today was a day for rest. Evening brought excitement when I learned that the night market was once again open. While I couldn’t resist returning to the same stalls for more spring rolls, fried insects and fruit shakes, I also enjoyed a rice and vegetable dish from a new place. I ate my chosen fare while listening to the high-pitched tones of a lady enjoying a bit of public karaoke. It occurred to me that if you really want to appreciate the tonal structure of the Thai language, then listening to someone sing a traditional song is probably the best way to do it. The challenge of trying to communicate in Thailand is starting to get to me. It’s just so hard to replicate, then memorise the intricacies of the varied tones. Too many times my attempts are met with confusion and misunderstanding.
