What is it that is driving me to continue this journey? What is the purpose? Sometimes I don’t know the answer. India seems to be a place where it is easy to ask, ‘What the hell am I doing here?’ It is a busy world unto itself. A tourist will barely skim the surface of what is going on, of how so many people survive together. As a tourist, you are often (in some places totally) seen as a source of money; not as a fellow individual and not as an interesting person, just something from which money can be extracted. I have already discovered that many Indians have no conscience when it comes to cheating foreigners. They do it with a smile.

So went another day wandering the crazy streets of Kolkata. I headed north to Howrah Bridge, which I crossed. I liked the nearby neighbourhoods on the east side of the river, where I found markets that were super busy but also exuded a sense of calm. Given that I wasn’t in a typical tourist area, I wasn’t hassled once. I tired myself out and decided to try the underground metro system, which gave me a smooth (though squashed) ride back home.
