For the first time in ages I allowed myself a sleep in. Habit meant that I woke up early anyway, but it was still nice to wake up to something other than the harsh call of an alarm. On emergence from my room, I rugged up against the cold and went for a walk through town, stocking up on fresh fruit and snacks as I went. Back at the guesthouse I enjoyed a late morning breakfast before retreating to my room and getting onto a task I should have completed a while ago. I’m helping to write a journal article about the recolonization of artificial habitat by an endangered Australian marsupial species called the Northern Quoll. My ex-colleague Chris has written a first draft and I have been meaning to provide feedback for ages. I didn’t want to do any real physical activity, so I took the chance to put my brain to work instead. It was really good for me to use my mind for scientific report writing and it makes me think I’d love to return to the field someday. Maybe a PhD will be on the cards when I’m ready to hang up my bicycle? I worked on the article until late afternoon when I went for another walk, returning home in time for dinner and another episode of Bear Grylls’ Man vs Wild in my host family’s lounge.
