The Terai is a dusty place and I hate to think of the health effects on the local population. To maintain my own health, I’m now riding with two layers of cloth over my face. Both general tiredness and a headwind made the going feel a little slow. There wasn’t much interesting going on scenery wise, just more rice fields, small villages with earth covered and thatched homes, and several wide river crossings that were mostly dry. Dust and pollution prevented me from seeing far into the distance. Towards the end of the day I passed two other cycle tourists. I was deep in my own thoughts when I looked up and just glimpsed them as they passed me heading in the other direction. I hesitated too long and before I knew it they were disappearing into the distance. I don’t know if they saw me or not. I’d be disappointed if they did and chose not to shout out. Rather than make the turn north and into the hills today, I decided to stop around 3.30pm in Bardibas. I checked out a few guesthouses before bargaining for the best price at the nicest one. I rested for a little before going for a walk in town, which was very dark and uninviting.
