Having occupied my classes thus far with word games and talk about my bicycle trip, I was told today that I am to start teaching course work. That is, I am to fill the role of a standard English teacher within the Nepalese school system. This is a far cry from the advertised position of “Someone to help in our English classes with pronunciation”. It is also quite a stretch for me, given that I have absolutely no teaching experience. Not only do I have to learn how to teach via their course book, but at the same time I have to learn how to keep a room full of kids engaged in their work. It is going to be very interesting to see how things go. I am starting to appreciate the fact that I am at the school during a period full of distractions that mean no class – Sunday (yes, the school is open six days a week, including Sundays) was a sports carnival, tomorrow is a religious holiday, I think Friday is another sports day, and the following weekend is Christmas.
